How to Measure Your Yard for Sod

Accurate measurement is the most important step before ordering. Ordering too few pallets means a second delivery and possible gaps in your lawn. Ordering too many wastes money. For a full walkthrough with worked examples, see our guide on how to measure your yard. Here's how to measure each shape:

Rectangle

Measure the length and width in feet. Multiply them together. That's your square footage. Example: 40 ft × 50 ft = 2,000 sq ft.

L-Shape

Divide the yard into two rectangles. Measure each one separately. Add the two square footages together for your total.

Irregular / Curved

Break the space into approximate rectangles. Calculate each section, then add them up. Apply the 10% waste buffer in the calculator for cutout edges.

Always Round Up

You must purchase full pallets — no partials. Always round up to the next full pallet after calculating. It's better to have extra than to run short.

Pro tip: subtract the square footage of any driveways, walkways, garden beds, or structures from your total before calculating pallets. Only count the areas that will actually receive sod.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sod Quantities

These cover pallet counts and waste factors. For pricing, delivery, and payment questions, see our common questions about sod pricing.

How many square feet does one pallet of sod cover in Jacksonville?
One pallet of sod covers approximately 450 square feet. This applies to all four varieties we carry: St. Augustine, Zoysia, Bermuda, and Bahia. Always round up to the next full pallet — partial pallets are not available.
Should I add extra sod for waste and cuts?
Yes. For standard rectangular lawns, rounding up to the next full pallet usually provides sufficient buffer. For irregular-shaped yards, L-shaped lawns, or yards with curves and cutouts, add 10% to your square footage before calculating pallets. Our calculator includes a waste factor option to handle this automatically.
How do I measure my yard for sod in Jacksonville?
For a rectangle: measure length × width in feet. For an L-shaped yard: divide it into two rectangles, calculate each separately, and add them together. For curved or irregular yards: break the space into approximate rectangles, calculate each, add them, and then add a 10% waste buffer for the irregular cuts.
What is included in the sod cost estimate from this calculator?
The calculator shows your full estimate based on what you select. Material cost is always shown. Delivery is already included in the sod price shown. Check "Installation" to add $250 per pallet (includes ground prep) for our crew to lay the sod. The grand total updates instantly.
